Monitor Domain Keywords

Monitor Domain Keywords

To clarify readers domaining simply describes the activities related to trading in domain names or in other words domaining is a business of making money with internet domain names.

One of the key qualities of a good domainer is possessing great analytical skills and this is what this content is about. Most successful domainers are very alert, they monitor domain keywords and  trends. They are always in the hunt to take advantage of ever new growing opportunities.

So how do they do this? Well my friend they have tools or should I say a custom made tools that they wish not to share. When I first started out I thought I could just go out there and buy any names but after spending a lot of time and going through pains I eventually caught up with the system and understood the trade.  It wasn’t long before I realised that domaining was almost similar to stock trading.  So the point is prior buying any domain name for investment purposes it will be much better if your buying decisions are backed up with sales stats and data.

So where do I get this stats and data? First thing is first you should understand that there are various branches of domaining such 2L,3L, 4L, 2 Letter keywords, Brandables, Chinese etc. So you need to know where exactly you fit in based on your budget. I prefer Brandables and I guess you know why After you have understood where exactly you fit in then you need to start collecting or using already published domains sales data related to your choice of domaining.

For generic Brandables sales data Dngeek does a pretty good job in providing those sales data in case you’re feeling a bit lazy to do so, to make it even more interesting you could even use the bb sales data that are published on the homepage.

Then what do I do next? Start digging into the list and monitor the keywords. This is where your real power and ability should come into play. When I say keyword it could be anything from one to infinity but obviously the shorter the better. But let me give you a tip if for example you discovered that in brandables the two letter keyword “op” at the beginning, middle or ending of a domain commands a lot of sale and you are thinking of acquiring a Brandable domain that have such similar properties then you need to stop and ask yourself one good questions prior your acquisition. Will this domain be listed on a 3rd party store or at my domain store? (if you have one)

If at your domain store then no problem go ahead with your purchase but if for a 3rd party store please do some further analysis to calculate if it’s worth listing there, otherwise you will end up becoming an unpaid workforce for that particular site which you can visualise from the image below.

How some brandable domain name marketplace works

So how do I calculate and perform analysis to check if a particular domain is worth listing at a  particular marketplace?

Good question, to solve this you must have a preferential marketplace of your choice that you know performs well, as you may know there is no point of making any calculation on a marketplace that under performs. So let’s assume you’re into brandable domaining and for some reasons you are thinking of using brandbucket then the image below should be the kind of analysis you should be doing although it doesn’t completely relate to the keyword “op” but you understand my point I will just use this example for explanation

Monitor Domain Keywords

You got many brandable domains approved but can’t afford the listing fees? Then select the best.

Disclaimer: This bar chart might not necessarily describe the current state of brandbucket marketplace because it’s just an image and of course doesn’t report real time.  But having a system like this gives you a lot of unfair advantage and huge business intelligence about a market. For this example, the graph shows that brandable domains starting with “S” sales very well but technically it is the worst type of domain to list on brandbucket because of the competition if you compare the ratio of the sold vs listed. So from this chart we can deduce that listing your domain starting with “S” there wouldn’t do you much favour but of course a huge favour to the owner of the marketplace. Note: this would only be true if that bar graph is still valid at time of reading this post and also  depends on the weight of other hidden factors.

I know what you’re thinking now.  Yes, I understand it’s a crazy amount of work to be done to have a system that monitors keywords of a marketplace in real time at such scale (multiple keyword combination) but a system that does such type of analysis would soon be released on Dnbolt for free. But for the mean time it is highly suggested that you have something in place to keep you going.

So if your analysis shows that you are better of listing your domain in a particular marketplace then be my guest and do so otherwise consider listing that particular domain in your own domain store if its good enough.

That will be it from me today about monitoring keywords. Any questions, thoughts, disagreement kindly share them in the comments.
