5 Ways to sell a Brandable Domain Name

Selling Brandable Domains

They are many ways to sell a Brandable domain and today I will be discussing the 5 top ways.

  • Using Brandable Domain Marketplaces
  • Using Generic Domain Name Marketplaces
  • Custom made domain store backed up with Startup news blog
  • Custom Domain Store + Generic Domain Name Marketplace (pro way)
  • Using a Domain Broker

Let’s first look at some Advantages of Brandable Domaining

  1. Cost very little to acquire
  2. Very easy to find (using right tools)
  3.  Great Brandables Flips fairly quickly (using right strategy)
  4. Not very difficult to learn
  5. No entry barrier

Firstly, it would be worth mentioning that selling a keyword domain, Chinese Domains, 2L-3L or any other type is very different from selling a Brandable domain name. With a keyword domain name you know pretty much know who you can sell it to because you know what those keywords mean and you can further go ahead to create your sales pitch and same with other types of domain but with Brandable domains it’s quite different and you need to be a little smarter.

Well every day there are businesses looking to buy branded domain names especially businesses that are backed up with startup funds and investors. If you have a nice domain name and a simple brand name (easy to remember) but generic (could be applied to any business), you’ll attract more interest from buyers. But if you have these name but haven’t sold any read further and see new marketing strategies you can start implementing today for free.

  • Using Brandable Domain Name Marketplace

I am very sure many of you most have heard at least about one of the following Brandable domain marketplaces: such as Brandbucket, Brandroot, Namerific, Brandstarters, Catchy and many others. Believe you me there are not the best places in the world to sell your brandable domain names and they are not guaranteed to generate any sales except if you are lucky enough, good enough or getting preferential treatments.

At the time of writing this post most of this marketplaces above requires exclusivity which is basically preventing you from listing your brandable domains on other market places. Brandbucket and Brandroot are famously know for this act. They use all the domains listed by their users to supercharge their own website at their cost. I am not entirely against it but just letting you know just in case you are wondering how to compete with them.

  • Using Generic Domain Name Marketplace

Personally, I found this approach much more friendly, in fact Michael Cyger publisher of Domainsherpa made a nice tutorial on how you can sell your domains on major marketplaces and also highlighting the potential problems to look out for while doing so. To reiterate:

His tutorial walks you through a 10-step process to list your domain names for sale at major marketplaces. You don’t need to do all the steps, but the more you do the more purchase interest you’ll receive.

Steps to sell your domain names at major marketplaces:
1. Organize your domain names for sale
2. Set pricing for your domain names
3. Hang a for sale sign
4. Select the right marketplaces
5. Sell domains on GoDaddy.com
6. Sell domains on Flippa.com
7. Sell domains on Sedo.com
8. Sell domains on DomainNameSales.com
9. Sell domains on Afternic.com
10. What to do after the sale

  • Custom Made Domain Store backed up with Start-up news Blog

There are many WordPress themes, Web builders and Landing page platform that allows you to create your own private domain name marketplace/landing pages on the fly. But I still feel something huge is missing especially if you are focused on selling Brandable domains. How can you increase your ROI with just a simple domain name for sale banner? How can you sell Brandable domains fast if you just have a for sale sign? If your domains are Brandable and targeted for Start-ups minded people, then you must have something that draws this kind of people to your site.

It’s just like going to an open space park and expect to catch many birds when you don’t have anything that will draw those birds closer to you, most birds feed on bread so feed birds with bread. Most entrepreneurs feed on Start-up news/idea blogs right? Then that means you should start creating and implementing relevant content targeted for start-up minded readers who can buy into your ideas and knowledge and sequentially buy your suggested Brandable domain name. But to be fruitful with this method there’s a lot you need to understand about content marketing which many domainers don’t know about and many mistakes you should avoid making which would be covered latter on.

Custom Domain Store + Generic Domain Name Marketplace (pro way)

I call this method the pro way of selling Brandable domain names. Namerific, GoDaddy, Flippa, Afternic, Undeveloped.com and many others don’t require exclusivity which means you can list your Brandable domain at all of them and also use your Custom Domain Store (backed with blogs) all at the same time for your domain names.

This method is x2 times more likely to sell your domain then just listing on Brandbucket or Brandroot in fact I am proud to say that this approach does a total kickass to both Brandbucket and Brandroot. But again I can’t promise that it will work for you.

Using A Domain Broker:  This is a laid back approach used by the big guys. Domain broker is basically someone who helps sell or buy a domain on your behalf. The process is fairly simple you simple ask a well-known domain broker to try to sell your domains, maybe he/she already knows some new companies or companies which are launching new products which may want that domain. But again you must have a valuable domain that is worth the time that would be spent.

I hope you have learnt some news ways to sell your brandable domain and will start taking action from today. Let me know in the comments if you agree or disagree with me.

Nice article, well researched.

I find that with brandables the key is really the buyer finding you rather than you going outbound. Doing outbound for brandables can work but you will probably end up getting less than your listed price.

The perfect brand name is a powerful tool that will only be more sought after in this ever developing world of multiple media platforms. If your name connects on the right vibes with the consumer, it will embed itself within their hearts and be forever relevant. This is also true for the future of search ranking, the simple fact is that the search engines prefer brands that are found by their name, rather than a search phrase.

Great article and suggest using direct navigation landing pages to collect offers, we prefer Efty. Totally would not waste time with outbound as Oviah has mentioned with brandables.

I agree that outbound vs inbound depends on the domain name itself and who the target audience is. I think the brandbucket way is more for end users.

More recently I found a new way for two of my brandable domains (which were not accepted by Brandbucket). I rented them out at Nameforest.com and after 6 – 9 months the end users exercised the buyout.

Thanks for the article and the ideas. I find Brandbucket very odd and totally unpredictable in their choice of names so I am giving Efty a try. I hadn’t heard of some of the other places you mentioned like undeveloped.com – so thanks again for the tips

Great idea. I really learnt something here. The sprout of numerous brandable domain marketplaces and alternative brand names options will surely undermine brandbucket usefulness in the coming future..
